We’d stayed at The Prince before. It was just around the corner from Hotel Urban St Kilda in Fitzroy Street. Being unorganised and unsure we’d make it to the 40th we had waited to till the last minute to book and had missed out on getting into The Prince where everyone else was staying for the 40th. I was glad to be honest.
At Hotel Urban St Kilda, it’s just seven kilometres from the city. The rooms are big, the toiletries are Olympian Michael Klim and his wife Lindy’s Milk toiletries, the mini bar had everything from an exfoliating mitt to champagne and the bed was big enough to get away from the great white snorer. But no amount of square metres or comfortable bed could fix the fact I could easily read a book at sun rise without pulling the blinds up or putting a light on, when all I really wanted to do was sleep in.
Maybe one of Urban St Kilda’s greatest assets is the The Hub and Mavis Brown’s Bar located a short lift ride downstairs.
Funky, relaxed and plenty of room to move @hubstk there was a mouth-watering array of culinary delights like Rum and Raison porridge and poached eggs dripping in creamy hollandaise sauce with sides of chocolate croissants and strawberry muffins. All enjoyed around big round share tables. Caffeine, yes please I’ll have two, papers and with a great atmosphere, it was hard to go past @Hubstk. I made sure we didn’t eating breakfast there both mornings we stayed.
Mavis Brown’s bar was great too. Cocktail happy hour 4.30-5.30pm $12, as well as great range of wines and spirits. I was in danger of seeing nothing else of Melbourne and St Kilda except the insides of Urban’s shopfronts.
Alas, I did leave on Saturday night to attend the 40th birthday of mother of four beautiful boys under eight, part-time worker, full time studier, my inspiring sister-in-law Vanessa. I was glad I did that too. It was such a beautiful night under the setting Melbourne sky-line where presents for the guests, catching up with friends seen long ago and beautifully dressed tables were the order of the night.
Wrap up
Although it all seemed too hard to make it to Melbourne for a birthday party but we were soo glad we did. No children, fabulous family and friends and the chance to celebrate the milestone birthday of family.
There were no princes, but we were happy to drown our self in milk and next time I’ll pack our eye pillows.

Brickbats
The room was way too bright for two people away from their children for two nights and looking for at least one sleep in, but if you’re tired enough you find a way and we took to sleeping with the skinny pillow over our eyes. The other half found the bed too hard. The two pillow options were very thin or very fat and solid. The water from the shower escaped into the bathroom only just being able to be absorbed by the bathmat outside the shower.
Would we go back? Yes. St Kilda is a great part of the world and the funky Urban has it all in one place.
